| History: |
What is now known as "THE WILPEENA PICNIC RACES", conducted by THE MACKENZIE RIVER AMATEUR PICNIC RACE CLUB INC., commenced in the late 1920's on a property north of Dingo called 'HONEYCOMBE' and was then called the ---HONEYCOMBE PICNIC RACES". The racetrack was situated beside the banks of the MacKenzie River. Race meetings were held there until 1939, when, with the outbreak of World War II racing ceased and did not resume until 1964. At that time a new venue was found on a nearby property, Wilpeena, where a permanent racecourse and associated facilities were established. Racing continues there until this day. The Race Meeting for many years was hosted by the late Tom and Val Acton and is now hosted by their son Alan and his wife Jennifer The Club is one of only four picnic race clubs remaining in Queensland, so in a way is quite unique. |
