He had to work hard for it but Youthful Jack came out the victor in the Listed Conrad Treasury Brisbane Plate 1400m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, May 30.
With Corey Brown in the saddle Youthful Jack (G3 Youthful Legs USA-Formative) dropped back in the field after their jump from barrier two.
In the straight Geeza (Michael Rodd) had the lead but then Youthful Jack came to him and stole it.
Geeza kicked again and a photo finish had to separate the two. It was the $3.80 race favourite Youthful Jack who came out in front by a short head.
Little Mel (Terry Treichel) was third by two lengths.
There weren’t too many connections on course that day with owners Ross Stitt and Geoffrey Sheedy away and trainer Allan Denham in Sydney, leaving Geoffrey’s wife Gina to greet the returning winning horse and rider.
Brown knew they had to work hard for the win on the slow track.
“He’s done well after his last run,” he said. “He had the perfect run today.
“It was a grinding win.
“Back on top of the group he probably wins a bit better.
“I rolled him off five or six wide around the home turn to give him plenty of room to stretch out.
“We may have got there a little bit too soon. We probably got about half a length in front of the second horse (Geeza). The second horse wore me right back down to a short half head in the finish.
“It was a good effort. He’s a lovely horse. He’s definitely going to be much better second time in I reckon.”
Youthful Jack now has 12 wins to his name from 20 starts, this being his fifth Stakes win.
