The 2009 Doomben Cup victor Scenic Shot returned to the winner’s circle to maintain his title in the Group 2 Seppelt Wines P.J. O’Shea Stakes 2200m.
He won the race last year but this time on Saturday, May 30 in-form Carnival jockey Shane Scriven guided the six-year-old gelding through a bumpy run.
Scenic Shot (G6 Scenic IRE-Sweepshot) was involved in altercations at the jump, past the winning post the first time and at the 1000m.
But none of this stopped the $2.90 race favourite taking the spoils by two and three quarters of a length.
Mirkola Lass (Craig Grylls) placed second three quarters of a length in front of Fulmonti (Hugh Bowman).
Scenic Shot isn’t the biggest of horses but he has many Black Type wins and placings to his name.
His jockey Scriven is adding more Black Type wins to his repertoire this Winter Carnival being aboard for Scenic Shot’s Doomben Cup win plus picking up two wins on Rampant Lion.
The pair have had a great Carnival so far.
Trainer Daniel Morton’s father Len was on track looking after their charge and he was thrilled with the win.
“It’s just a matter of holding form and having the right kind of luck and I think the conditions of the track suited us today too,” said Len.
“To win that race again was great.
“We were a bit concerned when we drew wide again but once the track started to cut up in the first few races we realised we were just as well to be out there today.
“He handles the going and he’s proven himself to be the better horse here during the Carnival over the distances. It’s really great.”
Daniel is in Newmarket preparing Scenic Blast for a shot at Ascot but Len was certain he would have found a way to listen to the race although it would have been about five o’clock in the morning over there.
“If he’s had a way of listening to it he’d be jumping around annoying everybody there I’d say,” said Len.
Scriven competed against one of his favourite mounts Rampant Lion and he used his knowledge of the horse to his advantage.
Damien Oliver had the ride on Rampant Lion and was suspended for eight meetings because of careless riding.
“I never did try to get cover,” said Scriven. “The idea was to follow my old horse. I knew he’d take me into the race.
“Damien got out at the half mile and moved forward. I just wanted to be on his hammer, be within striking distance.
“I knew where I was on the turn they wouldn’t get past this old bloke. He didn’t even put up a fight there today, he cruised home.”
Scriven was impressed with what the gelding has achieved in Queensland.
“He’s come up here and he’s thrived in the sunshine now that’s we’ve got a bit.
“The boys have done a sensational job with him. He’s gone on with his Doomben win.
“He beat them with a bit of contempt today so he’s not finished with yet.”
Connections are now looking to the Brisbane Cup for Scenic Shot depending on the weight he receives.
