Sunshine Coast gelding Acorns shone for trainer Bruce McLachlan on Saturday when he cruised to win the Listed Subiaco Hair J.F. Meynink Stakes 1000m at Eagle Farm.
The two-year-old was too strong for the field and picked up his first Black Type win from just three starts.
Ridden by Jason Taylor, Acorns (G2 Secret Savings-Shouq) jumped from barrier five with a plan to let the gelding roll along one off early leader Bradford. Taylor then let the gelding fly to win by two and a half lengths over Jazz Heart (Allan Robinson). Mr Orient followed in third place a further short half head behind.
“He’s a nice strong horse and doing really well. He’s such a little professional too. It was a pretty strong field and it was nice to see him win with such authority,” Taylor said.
“His last start he was second up and probably needed the run but I probably held him up a little bit too much the other day and he wanted to over race.
“The other day he was a lot fitter and stronger so the plan was to let him roll along and not to let him fight. He seems to have a high cruising speed and it allowed him to show a good kick in the finish.”
Taylor has built up a strong partnership with the horse who has won two of his three starts so far.
“I’ve ridden him in all three starts and his debut win was very impressive he began from a wide gate and showed enough speed to kick away in the straight,” Taylor said.
Acorns’ next start will likely come at Easter in the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classic 1200m with Taylor adding that “he should be very competitive in the race”.
