Robert Thompson encourages Litter to a victorious finish
|
Litter picked up her second Black Type win on Saturday as she heads into the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale tomorrow. Following on from the Listed Wenowa Girl Handicap victory at Randwick in late March, she has claimed the Listed Myer Sir Edwards Williams Handicap 1500m.
All her wins have been on dead to heavy tracks. Punters who picked up on this at the heavy track at Eagle Farm claimed $6.50 for the win.
Broadmeadow trainer Kris Lees said she likes the wet tracks. “She hasn’t perhaps been on this heavy before but she’s certainly done well on slow tracks.”
It was a great ride by Robert Thompson, who after travelling well back and last coming to the turn, got a late split to get to the front and win.
“She’s such a big strider. I thought ‘oh god we’re in trouble here’ because I said to Robert ‘whatever you do try to get to the outside’. I’ve got Royal Discretion in the fourth race who’s drawn barrier 14 and races on the pace (placed second) and Litter who gets back and drew the right alley. So if I could have reversed them I would have been happier.”
Impressively $101 outsider Ready When You Are (Ryan Wiggins) followed home second by a length even after being steadied at the 1400m and racing wide throughout the majority of the event. Race favourite Mr Baritone NZ (Steven Arnold) managed third by a neck.

Lees is hoping to get plenty for the mare at the sales. “She’s won a couple of Listed races now. She’s been Listed placed and fourth in a Group 3 in a photo finish,” he said.
“To be honest, she’s probably just maturing now, there’s probably plenty of racing left in her.”
Having a career of predominantly fillies and mares races, Litter (M5 Catbird-Alkimiya USA) amassed $203,930 from 26 starts including five wins, eight seconds and three thirds after being purchased for $60,000.
Lees thought she did well because of the increase in distance. “Fourteens (1400m) have been a little bit short for her. She’s always been hitting the line. There just hasn’t been the mile races around for her. That’s why we elected to go for the 1500m today rather than the 1400m, the fillies and mares race.”
