Battle for Australia’s top apprentice farrier
Farriers play an important role in the racing industry and the Queensland Master Farriers’ Association (QMFA) are hosting an event to promote this significant trade.
The QMFA will host an inaugural competition to find Australia's best apprentice farrier on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 8.30am at the University of Queensland's Gatton campus.
Each state will select their top apprentice and they will compete against their counterparts from all over the country for the $500 prizemoney and the title of ‘Australia's Top Apprentice Farrier’.
The representatives from each state will compete in four events to score the highest points.
Queensland’s representative is Dan Philip. Dan spent his apprenticeship with Steve Costin of Beaudesert and is trained at the University of Queensland Gatton campus by Keith Swan and Terry Drenin.
NSW entrant Tim Heeb also has a Queensland connection completing his apprenticeship with Steve Riggs at Harvey Bay but trains at Scone TAFE with Bob Sim.
In addition to this all other apprentices are invited to compete as well by entering a Mail-In Shoe Competition where apprentices from each year will be required to make a different shoe.
