A fast paced race and a flying run home ensured El Cambio’s win in the Group 3 Heinrich Group Gold Coast Guineas 1200m with a track record.
Ridden by Rod Quinn from barrier 14, El Cambio (G3 Commands-Chaparra) sat well back in the field before moving up in the straight. At the 200m he just sped home leaving race leader Xaardante (Stathi Katsidis) back in second place by three lengths.
Heart of the Citi (Brad Pengelly) headed in as $3.80 race favourite and placed third by a length.
El Cambio’s time of 1-07.95 was a new track record and trainer Peter Snowden was pleased his plan “just to win” came to fruition
“It was a nice effort. It was a first run back from a short let up and I was quite happy with the win,” he said.
“He drew an awkward gate and got back a bit in the run and they went very fast which sort of helped for a run on sort of horse and that’s what he is. He was able to pick them up in the straight.”
“From the barrier that he had, he had no option but to go back. It’s just lucky they went quick enough and a few horses were spread out and he was able to get in. When they go that hard they normally do stop somewhere in the race. He was lucky enough and strong enough at the end to win.”
As his first race and win in Queensland, it’s a good start for El Cambio’s Winter Carnival campaign. The gelding has been in the prizemoney for all of his nine starts including four wins, three of which Black Type, and four seconds.
“He’s a nice horse. He’s a relatively lightly raced horse and he’s a well performed horse. The few times he’s been beaten, he’s been behind some very smart ones. He’s a talented horse,” said Snowden.
