Blake Shinn showcased his impressive touch at the Prime Ministers Cup raceday to win the Listed H. Harvey Prestige Gold Coast Bracelet 1800m aboard Marveen, and the Listed Attwood Marshall Lawyers Silk Stocking 1200m aboard Belong to Many at the Gold Coast on Saturday, May 2.
Marveen started as the $4 race favourite in the Gold Coast Bracelet and Shinn settled her in midfield for much of the race.
As La Etoile (Michael Rodd) made a charge up the inside along the home straight, Shinn got Marveen moving up along the outside and the two fillies fought it out, with Marveen getting to the post a neck ahead of La Etoile.
Miss Darcey (Corey Brown) was a length back in third place.
Marveen’s (F3 Orientate USA-Shiny) trainer Robert Smerdon was particularly pleased with the win as this was the first her first race at the extended distance of 1800m.
“Today was a test whether she could stretch her distance out,” he said. “Sixteen hundred metres being the furthest (she has raced). She was racing like she’d go the extra.
“She’s always been strong to the line, but we are going into new territory. Back at the level weights here has served her well because she’s not a big filly.”
Shinn also found success in the Listed Attwood Marshall Lawyers Silk Stocking 1200m aboard Belong to Many.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Belong to Many (M5 Belong to Me USA-Foil) started from outside barrier 15, but Shinn settled her just behind the leaders for most of the race before winding up her classy sprint ability and shooting away from the field at the 200m mark.
Belong to Many won by two and one quarter lengths and secured $96,000 in prizemoney for connections, while Court (Damian Oliver) came in second, a long head in front of Russeting (Ron Goltz).
The $2.90 race favourite Zero Rock (Joe Bowditch) came in fourth.
Shinn is proving very popular with connections after the weekend by bringing home a total of $176,000 in prizemoney.
