A Bright Shadow for Vietnam

Vietnam (inside) gets to the front

Vietnam has resumed very well picking up a Black Type win in the Listed Sporting Wheelies & Disabled Assoc. Bright Shadow Fillies & Mares Quality Handicap 1200m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, April 5.
It was jockey Jason Holder’s third win of the day after picking up wins on Albert the Fat and Serunai earlier. Jumping from barrier three Holder settled mid-field, then snuck up on them in straight. Vietnam (M5 Admiralty USA-My Wife’s Advice) got a split and shot to the front.
Lasoron (Dean Tanti) put in a challenge but settled for second by a head. White Diamonds (Matthew Gatt) followed one and a quarter lengths in third place.
“She drew well and settled sort of a touch worse on the field. There was good speed in the race and she got a few breaks on straightening and got a terrific run through the field and it just opened up for her. Probably got to the front maybe a bit too soon and she was strong enough to hold off Lasoron,” said Vietnam’s trainer Liam Birchley.
Birchley was happy to see the mare get a Listed win, “especially over 1200 (metres), she’d already been placed in the (Queensland) Oaks so getting a 1200m was a big bonus for her,” he said.

“I was always going to need a little bit of luck. The speed they went at I was confident they’d open up a little bit so just needed a touch of luck there.”
“I thought she could probably run a place, not so much winning because most of them are speciality 1200m horses, whereas she’s sort of performed mostly over further. She just sprinted well fresh, and it worked out well in the end,” said Birchley.
Vietnam’s last win was at the Gold Coast in May last year and she also claimed second in the 2006 Group 1 Queensland Oaks and has picked up $216,600 prizemoney for connections from her 18 starts.
