Breaking through for a maiden win on a beautiful day at Doomben on Saturday, December 5 was promising filly Raise Up.
The Kelly Schweida-trained two-year-old did not have it all her own way in the Rhino Blanket QTIS 600 2YO Handicap 1110m, but a patient ride by Damian Browne returned a financial boost for connections.
Raise Up is registered for QTIS added stakes and hence collected $53,000 in prizemoney, which included a $21,000 QTIS bonus.
The Shovhog filly out of Raise a Million, who jumped as race favourite, recorded her first victory from barrier one but found plenty of trouble along the way.
“It was a good sound effort,” Schwieda said. “She raced a bit greenly…she’s a bit of an erratic little filly.
“Damian (Browne) rode her very well, and she showed a bit more speed than she did the other day which caught us a bit unaware. Down the run she got held up, but he’s a very patient rider that bloke and he just bided his time.”
Schweida’s praise for Browne is just, as the jockey contended with the filly wishing to overrace mid-journey and then a squeeze from four horses on either side of the two-year-old in the straight provided further hurdles.
Eventually the heads opened up for Browne at the 200 metre post and Raise Up needed little coaxing as she rolled over the top of her contenders by half a length.
Seven Wonders, trained by Paul Nolan and ridden by Brad Pengelly, finished second and does not look far from his first win after only two starts.
High Chancellor fell one length further behind. However, in a positive note for connections of the Robert Heathcote-trained gelding, this was a marked improvement on his only other race start where he ran eighth of eight at Eagle Farm on Saturday, November 28.
The two-year-old, ridden by apprentice Mitchell Speers, was QTIS and QTIS 600 registered allowing connections to not only collect the $5000 cheque for third, but a $6000 race bonus.
Schweida, while happy to have the improving two-year-old Raise Up in his stables, recorded a double in the Knauf Class 6 Handicap 1615m with proven mare Seesawing.
The four-year-old has made it obvious to connections that she loves the mile journey at Doomben recording four wins and two seconds from six starts when the racetrack and distance are combined.
Hopefully not out of her comfort zone, Seesawing is being aimed at the 1400 metre journey of the Magic Millions Cup on Saturday, January 9.
In further QTIS results from the Childhood Cancer Support Raceday, which featured the Group 3 George Moore Stakes, Dusty’s Felt trained by Brett Baker and ridden by Jim Byrne recorded a second placing to collect $11,000 with a $6000 QTIS bonus included.
The three-year-old gelding made slight ground on race winner Crystal Honour (Stathi Katsidis), who had a bold showing in the large field of the Rhino Roofing QTIS 3YO Handicap 1615m.
While Dusty Felt has claimed only one victory from 10 starts, he has eclipsed $40,000 in career prizemoney which includes $16,000 in QTIS added stakes.
