Kiss Me Katy notched up win number four from as many starts, proving the filly’s future is bright as she powered through the heavy track at Eagle Farm on Saturday, June 6.
Once Brad Pengelly brought the filly to the head of the field, 900m out in the Listed Ambassador Travel Sir Douglas Wadley Two-Year-Old Fillies Plate 1200m she never looked like being headed down the straight.
“This race was always the goal, and let’s see how long this (winning) can last,” said trainer Steven O’Dea.
“I wanted to give her six weeks off after last time which meant she was going to miss most of the Carnival so this was the obvious target for her.
“It’s good to get some Black Type with her.”
When asked of Kiss Me Katy’s (F2 Mull of Kintyre USA-St. Covet Girl) ability to lead the field O’Dea sent an ominous message to future challengers, noting his star in the making will perform increasingly stronger if raced just off the pace.
“It would have been nice to take a sit today,” he said.
“I think she’s a better chaser than she is when she leads. There was no real obvious speed in the race. She wanted to go a little bit keen today. Pengelly rode her sort of astride and she settled in front then.”
Pengelly, coming off a nine week break due to injury, echoed the sentiments of the trainer. “She coped quite well,” he said.
“I really believe she’s a better chaser than she is a leader. She’s got a lot of untapped potential there.
“She obviously needed the run the other day and it didn’t knock her around too much either. She presented herself well today.”
Kiss Me Katy dismissed any thoughts of a challenge from the field at the top of the straight extending her lead.
While not making inroads into the leader, Dual Chamber ridden by Matthew Palmer ran a gallant second with an unimpressive Lagerphone five lengths behind in third.
Hugh Bowman, jockey of Lagerphone, felt the filly had jumped from the gates nicely yet could not maintain the early speed and was trapped wide around the bend.
To go forward Bowman then cut back inside Madeittothemoon (Peter Robl) nearer the rail at the top of the straight but the race was well and truly gone and Lagerphone will benefit from the run in only her third race.
Kiss Me Katy looks set to freshen up then attack Sydney next with O’Dea aiming for a run in the San Dominico Stakes 1100m on August 8 at Randwick.
“She fired up a little in her preparation. Once she’s settled we’ll be looking to 1400m,” said O’Dea.
