Keano added a Black Type win to his resume when he put in a strong sprint to claim the Listed Myer QTC Lightning Handicap 1000m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, June 6.
The Danny O’Brien-trained colt jumped from the inside barrier and travelled along on the rails.
While he was late to the mounting yard, Sequallan (Craig Grylls) had no trouble getting to the front of the field early and holding the lead position.
But Keano (C3 Pins-O’Reilly NZ) moved out from the fence in the straight and strode ahead to take on the race leader and sped away to win by two and a quarter lengths.
Black Ink (Shane Scriven) was second, two and three quarters of a length in front of $3 race favourite News Alert (Jim Cassidy).
O’Brien always had confidence in his runner and believes the colt will only improve with time.
“I thought he could win the Stradbroke if he got into it,” he said.
“This winter preparation will help him get better.
“He’ll get to Group 1 company but a bit later that I’d like.”
In his nine starts Keano has never been far from the front and his form stands at four wins and a third.
“I’d rather have an unlucky fast horse than a slow one that gets all the breaks,” said O’Brien.
Corey Brown was onboard Keano for the win and he also rode him a month earlier when they placed fourth at Doomben.
“Last start at Doomben when I rode him he had absolutely no luck,” said Brown.
“Probably it wasn’t really his track. He got back a little bit and made runs from about the 600m but then ran into a number of traffic jams up the straight.
“Get him on a big track here today, didn’t draw the ideal marble with the way the tracks racing but he overcome that and won with his life.”
