The Carlton Draught Tattersall’s Classic 1200m provided punters with a thrilling finish after She’s in the Guide dashed ahead of the 13-horse field only to be run down in the final few strides.
Single Rose (M5 Irgun-Waterford Fair) and Bareena shot away from the pack to close the gap She’s in the Guide had made on the field. The two went head to head and in the final few metres jockey Jim Byrne nudged ahead with Single Rose claiming the Listed race, a long neck ahead of Bareena (Jason Taylor). She’s a Guide (Carl Spry) crossed the line closely behind by only a long head in third place.
“It was in the end, but it didn’t look too thrilling at the 150m,” Single Rose’s trainer Shaun Dwyer said of the finish. “You can’t take too much away from She’s in the Guide, it was a great run by her and on the day we were a bit too good for her.
“I thought she (Single Rose) would travel a little bit better in the running but she had been in for quite a while and she could’ve even been looking for a 1300m but Jimmy had her in a nice position.
“To the mare’s credit, and Jimmy too, he got into the race a bit before I asked him to but he knew he had to get going and she responded very well.”
Byrne added, “She’s got a really good 200/350 metre sprint. The plan was to hold her for as long as possible but the leader got away from us a little bit and I had to move her along a little bit earlier than I would have liked. She showed a lot of grit which is good.

“I think she is ideal for the 1300 and anything up to the 1300m. Preferably you would like to try and keep her as a sprinting mare because she has got a really good turn of foot.”
It was the first Black Type victory for the mare and Dwyer was happy to see the win go her way.
“Single Rose really deserved to win a nice Listed race. All in all it was a very pleasing result,” Dwyer said.
“She lost the Dr. John Power (Quality, Listed) on a protest and she was probably a little bit unlucky.
“It (Tattersall’s Classic win) has probably added significant value to her commercial value now. I think she will probably be a stud proposition this year. She’s probably not at the Group 1 level where she could enhance herself anymore over the next 12 months and she is a fresh horse so really there is only two or three runs a campaign in her.
“She probably won’t run for six weeks and be aimed at the two 1200 metre sprints including a Group 3 and see if she just enhances herself a little bit more.”
