National Apprentice Challenge kicks off
tomorrow at Belmont
10 October 2008
Queensland apprentices will participate in a national apprentice challenge series with the first leg to be held this Saturday at Belmont Park, Perth.
Gold Coast apprentice Michael Palmer will represent Queensland. Michael was runner up in the Metropolitan apprentice of the year last season and will ride Magical Gold trained by Chris Willis in the last race meeting of the season at Belmont Park.
Apprentice jockeys from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory will compete in the $60,000 race over 1400 metres.
QRL licensing and training manager Peter Smith said, “Other legs of the series scheduled so far include Canterbury on November 12, Hobart on February 9 and Mooney Valley on February 22.”
“The Queensland leg which will be used to promote careers in the racing industry is planned for March 2009.”
Points in the series will be allocated to each state rather than individual apprentices.
”This format provides the opportunity for several apprentices to participate from each state,” Mr Smith said.
At the conclusion of the final, the state which has accumulated the most points in the series will receive the National Apprentice Series Cup.
In the event of more than one state finishing on equal points a count-back will occur. The state with the most race wins, and subsequently the most seconds then thirds within the series will be declared the outright winner.
Further details about the Queensland leg of the series will announced shortly.
