Tariki cleaned up in the Commerce Qld Open Handicap 2220m at City Pacific Doomben on Saturday after dominating the race to claim his second win for the season.
Trainer Robert Bradshaw was confident his six-year-old would hold on for the win after jockey Paul Hammersley took to the lead well before turning.
“There was no speed in the race so Paul took the initiative. I said he was on a very fit horse and that he would appreciate the 2200m,” Bradshaw said.
“The sectional they ran home in and the way the race was run, nothing was going to beat him home.”
The winner clocked 34.85 seconds for the final 600m with a total course time of 2.16.52 for the 2220m race.
Tariki (G6 Sandpit-Piece of Cake) outran Mr Gold Fire (Joshua Jones) by two and three quarters of a length. It was another length and a quarter back to Crowning Force (Michael Dorrington) in third place.
The win was even better for connections who came from as far as Yeppoon and local areas of Ipswich and Brisbane to see their stayer clinch the win in style.

taking the lead and turning into the straight.
“They weren’t going very quick so I opted to go out and sit outside the leader,” Hammersley said.
“He’s very much a stayer and has one pace. That’s why I had no hesitations to go forward.”
Bradshaw agreed, “I know he can break 35sec at the end of his races; he’s a true stayer. There was no horse in the race that would break 34sec.”
