Jazz Heart defied many odds to claim the Nilsen 2YO QTIS Handicap 1200m at City Pacific Doomben on Saturday, February 9.
Firstly, the colt was the second longest priced runner of the field at $26 after an unsuccessful first run at Eagle Farm in late January. Second, he missed the start by at least a length and travelled last of all.
It wasn’t until the straight that jockey Glen Colless moved Jazz Heart (C2 Show a Heart-Bluedanu) to the outside. They only just got clear at the 100m when they swept to the front and pulled away to win in the polish flag colours of owner Stanley Leszczewicz.
Colless rode the emergency after the other emergency he was on, Rye Catcher, was scratched.
Trainer Bryan Guy thought the run was very good. “He was a little bit slow out and Glen let him find his feet and he was back about two lengths last. Coming to the 600m, Glen started to move forward on him and he just finished off the race great. He came from last on the corner and found the line very well,” he said.
Tuscon Rain (Scott Seamer) finished behind in second by two and three quarter lengths with Mr Mayfair (Manabu Kai) half a neck after for third.
“I left it up to Glen but I would liked to have seen him a little bit closer but when he was a little bit slow out Glen just let him find him feet and he just found his way through the field which was great.”
After racing unplaced in his first start, the colt again didn’t start well but this time it didn’t matter, picking up $32,000 for the win plus $21,000 in the QTIS bonus. “This time he did the same thing, he missed the jump, but I put a set of blinkers on him on the advice of Ricky McMahon. Ric was right in what he said; the blinkers really turned the horse around and put his mind on the job,” said Guy.
The slow track of the day didn’t hinder the colt either, “Show a Heart seemed to go through it so it probably did help him a bit but I was quite happy with that.”
