Phantom Ring and My Limit’s stoush for first place resulted in Phantom Ring getting ahead in the Nardia 3YO QTIS Handicap 1650m at City Pacific Doomben on Saturday, February 9.
Phantom Ring (C3 Clang-Bella Excelsior) began excellent and sat just behind the leaders as they went around.
My Limit met them at the front at the 300m but Phantom Ring ridden by Brad Pengelly continued to chase. Neck and neck the two fought it out in the last 100m but Phantom Ring had the extra energy to pull away and claim victory in the last few strides by half a length ahead of race favourite My Limit (Shane Scriven).
New Zealand horse A Grade (Glen Colless) was a further two and a half lengths behind for third.
Trainer Bevan Laming said the colt was well ridden. “He had a nice run all the way through and then My Limit swept round and looked to most probably winning the race but my horse just outstayed him. At the line he won quite easy really,” he said.
Phantom Ring has been showing excellent form winning his last three starts from five.
Also placing second in his first start, the colt’s prizemoney stands at $76,850 including $26,600 in QTIS bonuses.
Stepping up in distance, Laming thought the colt handled the distance well. “He could have gone further. I mean at the line he was going better than anywhere. He’s bred to stay. There’s a chance he might actually be sold to Hong Kong,” he said.
Laming explained Phantom’s Ring winning the battle with My Limit. “My Limit’s had good form. Most probably my horse was a bit more seasoned, a bit more fitter than My Limit. And that’s most probably the difference between winning and losing and he was fitter on the day,” he said.
