Devil Inside dictated from the start to win the Listed Myer QTC Lightning Handicap 1000m in what was most likely her swan song.
But the win will now give new owner Jon Haseler from Glenlogan Park something to think about after the mare was set to head to the breeding barn.
Glenlogan Park only took over the ownership of the mare weeks ago, prior to her going through the June Magic Millions sales at the Gold Coast.
Trainer Liam Birchley knows the horse well having trained her since day one and the QTC Lightning win gave the mare her second Black Type victory.
Ridden by Corey Brown and starting at $17, Devil Inside (M6 Langfuhr-Pink Moccasin) ran away to a length and a quarter win over Fritz’s Princess (Dale Spriggs). Stolit (Stephen Baster) claimed third, back a further two and a quarter lengths.
The six-year-old’s last start was on March 29 when fourth in the Listed Chief De Beers Quality Handicap 1110m.
“She goes good fresh and she’s a class mare,” Birchley said.
Drawing barrier 22 had its concerns for the trainer. “I didn’t know where we were going to end up or how hard she was going to have to work to get to the front. She had a little breather mid race and then was strong in the end.”
While Haseler was holidaying and not at the track, Bloodstock Agent Neil Jenkinson who sold the horse to Glenlogan Park, admitted it was probably her last race.
“The people who previously raced her are good friends and clients of mine and they were looking at retiring her as a racehorse with the view to send her to the breeding barn this year,” Jenkinson explained.
“They approached me to sell her for them and Jon Haseler and Glenlogan Park were good enough to charge in as soon as I suggested buy her.
“The intention was to run here and then retire her but there are a couple of options for her in Sydney but I would probably say this is the last that we will see of her.
“I think you will find she will be in foal to Show A Heart.”
It was Birchley’s second QTC Lightning Handicap win with his first back in 2005 with Helter Skelter.
