It was a slow start for race six when Palace Lover broke though the gates and galloped for a lap. Even the pace of the Group 3 Brisbane Riverview Hotel Chairman’s Handicap 2020m wasn’t a fast one.
But for Ric McMahon the finish line couldn’t come quick enough taking out his first Group win aboard Fulmonti.
His second day back riding from a broken leg, the young jockey guided Fulmonti NZ (G5 Montjeu IRE-Grosvenor’s Pride NZ) from barrier seven. They drifted back from the start, until moving to the outside after the bend. There they strode up and went to the lead, too strong for the chasing Diamondsondinside (Glyn Schofield) who settled for second by a half length.
“He relaxed perfect. I was travelling Diamondsondinside and he bought me to the turn and I sort of peeled off its back and he really let down good,” said McMahon.
“He’s a lovely horse and going places.”
The $4.80 race favourite Legendary Man (Corey Brown) was a further length behind for third.
It was also trainer Chris Jordan’s first Group win on his own, previously in partnership with his brother Kerry.
Fulmonti’s part-owner Alan Jones had praise for the former rugby league player and his “dedication, persistence and patience” with the gelding.
The praise didn’t end there with Jordan describing McMahon’s “beautiful” ride. “He’s an easy horse to ride but he’s got to be held up a wee bit and he’s done a beautiful job, the kid,” he said.
Discussing future plans for the horse, Jordan said, “He’s got to be a bit under done more than over done.”
“That horse never has a gallop on the track. Plenty of three quarter’s but never has a gallop.”
“He always lets you know if he’s feeling alright.”
“He’s out of a Gosvenor mare but they were always fresh horses as well. I think he’s got the pedigree to run and even Kerry has his doubts he wants too much further than 10 furlongs. But at this stage we’re heading there so we’ll find out.”
“The owner Barry Broomhead he went mad on the Montjeu’s. He thought they were going to be good horses and he went and put his hand up so he’s done the right thing,” said Jordan.
It was an impressive first Black Type win for Fulmonti with the gelding seeing more second than first places. From 33 starts, he’s achieved seven wins and 10 seconds for owners Barry Broomhead and Alan Jones.
