Pepperwood’s up to the mark

Pepperwood handled the step up in distance to over a mile with perfection on May 10 despite having to run wide throughout stamping his ability as a future stayer.
Ridden by Glen Colless, the colt cleaned up in the Group 3 Mitty’s Doomben Classic Plate 1615m winning by two and a quarter of a length.
Talented three-year-old My Joliene (Brad Stewart) ran home for second with Formular One Racer (Brad Pengelly) finishing in third place a further one and three quarters of a length.
“(He) Didn’t have it all going his way, but he was just too good today (May 10),” trainer Liam Birchley said.
“He’s had more than his share of bad luck so it’s good to get away with a win. He seemed to hit the line with a bit of gusto so you have to think he might want a bit more (distance).”
Colless was also happy with the way the horse handled the distance by leaving enough in the tank to sprint to the line.
“I thought all along that he could stay and just one to relax. Today (May 10) he was three wide, no cover, just bobbed along. He didn’t pull it off, just put himself into the race, sort of half pulled himself into the race coming to the corner (and) hit the line strongly,” Colless said.
“He’s getting better every start, the more he relaxes the better he’ll finish off his races.”
Pepperwood (C3 Easy Rocking-Rhianna Louise) was following on from a good run in the Listed Queensland Day 1400m a fortnight earlier which saw him claim second by a long neck.
The Group 3 win was Pepperwood’s second career victory and his first Black Type win taking his earnings to over $220,000.
