With the 2010 QTIS 600 Magic Millions Yearling Sales and accompanying raceday under a week away at the Gold Coast much of the industry’s talk has revolved around the big stakes winners of last year’s graduates.
Unfortunately at Doomben on Saturday, March 13 it was a case of near misses for those connections looking to reap the benefits of the QTIS 600 double-up bonus.
The Desleigh Forster-trained two-year-old Adebisi benefited from a kind run by jockey Shane Scriven in the Parmalat QTIS 600 2YO Handicap 1110m.
Sitting just off the pace after jumping from barrier six, the colt by Shovhog, out of Hell for Leather, strolled to the lead in the straight and looked in little trouble.
“It was always the plan to ride him the sit,” Forster said. “Every time he draws a barrier, he’ll take the sit and ride him quiet.
“It was good to see him winning here today. Barriers make a difference as we all know. It’s amazing what barriers do.”
While connections were rewarded with a $53,000 cheque, which included a $21,000 QTIS bonus for which they were registered, a $21,000 QTIS 600 double-up bonus went begging.
QTIS 600 added stakes, which are spread state-wide throughout a two-year-old racing season, will no doubt be the major talking and selling point of the upcoming sales on Sunday, March 21 and Monday, March 22 at the Gold Coast.
From four starts Adebisi has won two and finished second twice resulting in his career prizemoney reaching $144,000 in quick time.
“Shane and I are both of the opinion that he’ll run the 1400m to a mile,” Forster said.
“Everyone thinks we’re a bit mad, but you can ride him quiet and it doesn’t worry him. He’ll just switch off and goes to sleep and you can put him where you want.”
Finishing fast from worse than mid-field, Marking Time, from the Alan Bailey stables, is QTIS 600 and QTIS registered and only missed the $74,000 first place prize by one length.
The two-year-old gelding, ridden by Joe Bowditch at Doomben, had previously been a beneficiary of the first place QTIS 600 double-up bonus in November last year.
However, connections still collected $12,000 in QTIS 600 and QTIS added stakes for their second place effort, and increased Marking Time’s career prizemoney to $148,500, which includes $68,000 in race bonuses.
In similar fashion, third placed Huff and Puff, ridden by apprentice Owen Turpin, has previously visited the $74,000 winner’s circle through the gelding’s QTIS 600 and QTIS registration.
Ironically, Huff and Puff’s big payday came at the expense of Adebisi four weeks earlier.
On March 13, Huff and Puff still walked away with $6000 in added stakes for trainer David Lawlor and connections who now boast a total of $48,000 in QTIS 600 and QTIS bonuses from only four starts.
