STEWARDS REPORT
DEAGON OFFICES – FRIDAY 12 June 2009
On Friday, June 12, 2009 Stewards opened an inquiry into the handling of GALACTIC SPIRIT by jockey B. El-Issa in race 4, the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice Class 1 Handicap 1400m, at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club meeting on Saturday, May 23, 2009.
B. El-Issa stated his instructions were to settle the filly back in the field as per its last race, to ride it quietly and let the horse run home. B. El-Issa added that the horse was having its first start on the Cushion Track and in his opinion wasn’t totally comfortable on the surface. He further added that GALACTIC SPIRIT failed to sprint as expected. Trainer D. Murphy confirmed the instructions, but in his opinion B. El-Issa may have been able to place the horse under pressure earlier than he did.
Stewards on considering all the evidence and viewing the films, were of the opinion that B. El-Issa had erred in his riding of GALACTIC SPIRIT in that after leaving the 600m, he should have attempted to follow RENMARK (M. Hellyer) into the race after that runner improved around his mount when Stewards believed their was an opportunity to do so. As a result GALACTIC SPIRIT was unable to obtain clear running on straightening until shifting wider near the 300m. Stewards further noted that RENMARK shifted out under pressure leaving the 200m, resulting in B. El-Issa having to stop riding for several strides before obtaining clear running over the concluding stages. At the conclusion of the inquiry, Stewards informed B. El-Issa that his ride had lacked initiative and judgement expected of a senior rider.
At a further inquiry, jockey B. El-issa was fined $100 for failing to seek permission to leave the track at the above mentioned race meeting (LR49).
