A half head was all that separated Dorf Command and gross outsider Go Johemma at the final post of the Listed Recruitment Queensland Gay Waterhouse Classic Quality Handicap 1350m on Ipswich Cup Day.
Trainer, Clarry Conners, spoke highly of Dorf Command (F3 Commands-Mezdorf).
“Her form has been pretty good right from day one and she did everything right today,” he said.
“We picked out a nice race for her where there would be early speed on and she just needed a bit of luck in running.
“We knew it was going to be hard with a big field and bad barrier, and she would have to come from behind because of the short straight.
“She can really get home with very fast sectionals if she gets a nice easy run early.”
Jockey, Jim Byrne did exactly that and displayed his in-depth knowledge of the track timing his run on Dorf Command to perfection adding the Black Type race to his earlier win on Crossthestart in the first race, the Optus Business Direct Ipswich Mile 1MW Handicap 1666m.
“Jim knows Ipswich like the back of his hand,” said Conners. “We had the right person on top and just had to have a bit of luck and it came off.”
Race outsider, Go Johemma surprised all and had the bookmakers smiling when jockey Bobby El-Issa put a healthy gap on the field midway down the straight.
However Byrne explained that patience was the key to getting the fast-finishing Dorf Command home late in his first ride on the filly.
“I wasn’t going to panic on her; she has been doing pretty bad gates lately,” he said.
“She has raced once again without luck. Clarry seems to know how to draw these bad gates every time he comes up here,” said Byrne who rode Dorf Command from barrier 15.
“I got a pretty good run today and she just peaked at the 20m, but to her credit she fought back strong.”
Kisani (Terry Treichel) held strongly on the rail to finish off the trifecta.
Dorf Command’s next venture will be a step up in the Group 1 Queensland Breeders & Tattersall’s Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday, June 20.
