In a race named after her father, Tommy Smith, Gai Waterhouse again dominated the two-year-old fields scoring her third win in the Listed Pine Valley Tommy Smith Slipper 1200m at City Pacific Doomben.
This time it was with She’s Meaner (F2 Falvelon-She’s a Meanie) following previous wins with Sunday Joy (2001) and How Funny (2002).
Jockey Jim Byrne set an early pace with She’s Meaner after jumping from barrier four before kicking away to record a five and a half length win. Astatus (Jason Taylor) and Privileged Class (Gary Palmer) battled hard for the minor placings with only a nose separating second and third place.
“That was always the plan after talking to the connections they suggested to me to assert myself early and make sure I dominated the race and ride her accordingly,” Byrne said.
“Gai’s two-year-olds are straight out on the bunny…that’s the way she trains them and that’s why they are so dominant in the early two-year-old races.

She’s Meaner puts a smile on part-owner Jon Haseler’s face

“Every time you jump on one of Gai’s you know she is going to be racing on the speed and going to be extremely fit.
“I was able to get a few cheap sectionals which in two-year-old races you are rarely able to do and she let down really nice in the straight.”
She’s Meaner will now line up at the Magic Millions on Easter Monday in the Conrad Jupiters Magic Millions 2YO Classic 1200m.
