Quizzical Lady has finally nabbed a Black Type victory with the $150,000 Listed Glenlogan Park Fillies and Mares Stakes 1350m. The win came at City Pacific Doomben on Saturday, May 19 after three unsuccessful attempts in Listed Fillies and Mares races this campaign.
The win was also the biggest for trainer Bruce Hill in his own race after a half win in the dead-heated Listed Silk Stocking with Calchris at the Gold Coast where Quizzical Lady ran seventh.
Hill knew Quizzical Lady (M4 King Cugat USA-No Scruples USA) had the win in her. “She’s always been a star,” he said. “She’s always been the best one. Just drawn bad barriers and had soft tracks. Today she drew the good barrier and it was always going to help her.”
With Brad Pengelly aboard, Quizzical Lady got fast away on the inside barrier and travelled mid field behind the leaders pack. Finding a gap in the straight, she shot away battling it out with Chinchilla Rose (Stephen Baster) who came flying down the outside.
Chinchilla Rose, the $4.20 race favourite settled for second by long head but she impressed jockey Baster. “She ran super. I thought she was going to win,” he said.
Pengelly put a change in race style to the higher level of competition. “We’ve been riding her on the pace. She’s at that level now. She could sort of dominate in those lesser races but now she’s up to her level you cant dictate like that anymore with her,” he said. “So we went to Plan B and just tried to ride her a little bit quieter and it really payed dividends.”
“At the three furlong mark I was that relaxed it was borderline going that good, she was that happy and I got on the back of Single Rose, got momentarily held up for a little bit too which she regathered from.”
Seconde (Tony Pattillo) finished third by one and a quarter lengths.
Quizzical Lady has earned $325,900 for owners Leslie & Debbie Cowell with eight wins and two seconds from 15 starts.
