With just a few New Zealand wins to her name, Graeme Rogerson’s decision to bring Awesome Planet to Brisbane for the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival proved a great one.
The three-year-old filly picked up her second Black Type win in as many months by taking out the Group 3 Hidden Dragon Doomben Roses 2020m at Doomben on Saturday, May 16.
From 20 starts Awesome Planet (F3 Giant’s Causeway USA-Dance on the Moon IRE) has four wins, two seconds and four thirds.
“She’s just had no luck,” said Rogerson. “She could have won three or four of the bigger ones.
“She’s a pretty good filly this. She beat the older mares at weight-for-age.”
From the jump Jim Cassidy moved Awesome Planet forward and they travelled mid-field off the fence.
The field came around the home turn as a bunched group and Awesome Planet pressed forward and came home strongly to win in a photo finish a half head in front of Ekstreme (Opie Bosson).
Purple (Kerrin McEvoy) trailed a length for third, a neck in front of $3.90 race favourite (La Etoile).
Top Sydney jockey Cassidy was happy with the way the race panned out.
“She’s not very big but she’s all heart,” he said. “She’s had a couple of runs in New Zealand against the better fillies that have actually come to Sydney.
“I thought her run was good. I was travelling really good coming to the 600m so I was happy to peel out three deep. I even sat for 10 or 12 strides when I straightened I was going that good.
“The thing that I like is her determination.”
