Fabiarna collected a career best on Saturday at Eagle Farm when she secured the Listed Juanmo Quality (Fillies and Mares) Handicap 1200m.
A Black Type win was on trainer Trevor Bailey’s agenda when he bought the horse over a year ago and his planning paid off on the weekend with Fabiarna (M5 Lion Hunter-Mukda Lass) claiming the $100,000 Listed race.
Ridden by Mandy Radecker, the five-year-old found a break in the final stages and took to the outside to run down the fast finishing mare Calchris (Paul Hammersley) by three quarters of a length. Montoux (Michael Palmer) finished third a further one and three quarters of a length back.
Bailey was happy to get the Listed run on the board with the mare, adding that their raceday plan was left up to the jockey.
“We normally just leave it up to Mandy. We had a little bit of a plan and we thought she would be four or five lengths off the lead but at the end of the day it is how the race is run and the pace. I said you (Mandy) judge it for yourself,” Bailey said.
“She got the split at the 150 metre mark and before that got held up a little bit. If she had got a clear break she would have probably won a little easier.”
The win was Fabiarna’s first Black Type win and boosted her earnings to over $230,000.
“We bought her about 14 months ago with the idea of trying to get a bit of Black Type beside her name. We knew she had the ability but it’s like everything else, when it’s your turn, and it did on Saturday,” Bailey said.
“We didn’t pay very much for her and it was a good result.”
