Nuclear Medicine added a Black Type win to his top form by taking out the Listed Dr John Power Quality Handicap 1200m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, April 19.
Ridden by Taree jockey Scott Thurlow for Coffs Harbour trainer Gordon Yorke, Nuclear Medicine (G4 Nuclear Freeze USA-Gentle Air) jumped from barrier two and got a good start getting right to the front. He dropped back and travelled on the inside before getting away in the straight to win by two and three quarter lengths ahead of Easy Rocker (Lacy Morrison). Stolit (Andrew Spinks), the $4 race favourite, was a further three lengths behind for third.
“He rode him perfectly, he jumped him out and put him in the position and capitalised on that. He held him together all the way and just sort of let him down the last 300m so it was good,” said Yorke of Thurlow’s ride.
Yorke said the race ran to plan, “He sort of controlled the race, he dictated to them and he was able to run it out as he liked.”
“He’s always shown a lot of promise. He’s not a big horse and he’s just got a little bit of time to mature. We’ve been lucky with the wet tracks. He handles the wet very well. So we’ve been very lucky with that.”
Since winning his maiden in May last year, with two fifths before that, the gelding has always been in the first three placings. Nuclear Medicine won a fortnight earlier at City Pacific Doomben bringing his tally to six wins, two seconds and three thirds from 13 starts.
“I’ve nominated him for a couple of races but his main target will probably be the Healy (Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes 1200m) and we’ll just see. I spoke to the owners and I just said the horse has got a lot of maturing ahead of him and if you look after him he might win a couple more good races,” said Yorke.
