A performance described by jockey Damian Browne as “due” saw Our Mr Cashman salute the judge at Doomben on Saturday, February 20.
The Trident QTIS 3YO Handicap encouraged a 17 horse field to chase added stakes over the 1200 metre journey.
Our Mr Cashman, a gelding by Aucash out of Buttermere, has recorded 16 starts for four wins, however, this being his first victory outside the Rockhampton track.
“He’s been bridesmaid on a number of occasions to some pretty handy horses this season. He was due to get his turn, and he got it,” Browne said.
“He’s probably a little bit one paced, but has a pretty high cruising speed. So when they were able to roll along in front it suited him.”
Our Mr Cashman, trained by Andrew Williamson, has returned connections $154,000 which includes $54,000 in QTIS added stakes from an initial outlay of $6000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sales.
Williamson’s response to also being a part-owner: “That’s even better!” The group of nine owners, and mates, were brought together by the trainer and Darryl Wockner.
“He was a pretty cheap horse,” the Sunshine Coast-based trainer told of his fortunes. “I’m a good mate of Liam Birchley’s, and he told me to go and have a look at him because he looked a good horse.
“I think he was on the last day and he was in the last few lots.”
The three-year-old was gifted a rails run just off the pace from barrier three by Browne, who slid out from behind the pacesetters and presented the gelding for a dash down the Doomben straight.
Show a Lion Heart, for Ballina-based trainer Stephen Lee, trailed Our Mr Cashman for the trip and almost stole the victory on the post.
It was deemed a short neck separated the pair, with the second placed jockey Scott Seamer faced with the irony of being the last to ride Our Mr Cashman to a win eight months prior in Rockhampton.
“I thought it was a good effort,” Williamson said. “On the line he was holding them pretty well and his consistency the last

four starts has been good.
“The day Chris Munce rode him on the Gold Coast (January 9) he got off and gave him a good wrap. He’s just a real trier.
“Damian (Browne) is hard to get because of his weight, but I’m always happy to put him on when they get the right weight, that’s for sure. He’s a very underrated rider.”
Timothy Bell produced another top ride for trainer David Murphy to have Unica Bahaya in the hunt at the conclusion.
The consistent three-year-old filly finished only a nose further behind in third after being guided along the rails at the top of the straight from the rear of the field.
Unica Bahaya is also QTIS registered and has accumulated $67,000 in career prizemoney from five starts, which includes $29,000 in added stakes.
While the added stakes remained relatively safe in the Ferg Reid QTIS 600 2YO Handicap 1350m, Heartsareforlove did continue the fortunes of one returned jockey.
Chris Munce capped a successful homecoming to Queensland racing with a win at Doomben on Saturday, February 20 to back up two wins the previous Saturday on the same track.
The 40-year-old hoop’s last victory in Queensland, before his recent return, came from Group 1 company on Reigning to Win in the T.J. Smith Classic of June 2006.
In a career that has claimed eight Group 1s on Queensland soil, it is a bonus to see Munce further strengthen the senior riding ranks.
Trained by Warwick Farm-based John Thompson, Heartsareforlove made it two wins on the trot at Doomben from three career starts.
The two-year-old filly denied Random Orbit (Timothy Bell) by a head the opportunity to collect a big payday for connections in the colt’s sixth start.
Random Orbit is QTIS 600 and QTIS registered, and would have benefited from the double-up bonus which returns a total of $74,000 to the winner.
The colt was still presented with $22,000 in prizemoney, which includes $12,000 in QTIS 600 and QTIS added stakes.
