Apprentices took out the top two spots in the Carlton Draught Country Cup 1200m on July 19 at the Tattersall’s meeting.
Adrian Coome partnered with Craiglea Warrior to claim victory in the $50,000 race for owner Stan Johnston. The apprentice timed his run perfectly making a dash through the centre of the field to claim the win by a neck.
Craiglea Warrior had to fight hard in the final few strides as Leondari on Ice (Joshua Jones) finished strongly on the inside of the gelding. Chevron Island (Garry Baker) also ran home well finishing in third place a further short head back.
Trainer Peter Fleming backed up Craiglea Warrior from a win a week earlier at the Sunshine Coast and described the gelding as “tough”.
“He tries every time and fought on really well. He’s a very tough horse,” Fleming said.
“He’s had a fantastic campaign. Since he had a break over EI he’s come back terrifically.”
Since resuming in late January, Craiglea Warrior has secured five wins including the Gympie Cup at his home track. He has only missed out on a prizemoney cheque twice in the 14 starts this campaign.
