Drizzle takes back-to-back Stayer’s Cup
The Gary Sherer-trained Drizzle went the distance to win the Marriott Magic Millions Stayers Cup 1800m in a photo finish.
Tatura trainer Sherer was very happy with the win. “We targeted this race and it worked out really well. I’d like to convince them to buy another one.”
Jumping from the outside barrier 11 and ridden by jockey Luke Nolen, a flying finish ensured Drizzle (G6 Torrential USA-Vain Hope) got there by a half head ahead of Nellie Got There (Corey Brown). The photo finish for third went to race favourite Showify (Stephen Lowe) by a half neck.
“We were worried about the gate. Everything worked out really well,” said a very happy Sherer.
Nolen was also impressed with Drizzle’s win, “Gary’s done a top job,” he said.
The Stayer’s Cup is obviously the gelding’s forte. His last win was in the same race last year by a long neck with Jim Cassidy aboard, creating a race record with 1-47.85 also from the outside barrier.
