A visit to Queensland broke News Alert’s string of second placings when the four-year-old gelding won the Listed Triple M Chief De Beers Handicap 1110m.
News Alert (G4 Danehill Dancer IRE-Breaking News) has worn the bridesmaid tag in over half his 15 starts. He has now earned three wins, eight seconds and a third.
Prior to moving to Con Karakatsanis’ Rosehill stables the gelding had a running four seconds. With Karakatsanis he scored another second before the win at Doomben on Saturday, May 23.
Karakatsanis has a high opinion of the horse and is keen to see what he can achieve with him.
“I’ve only just got him and every day I learn a lot of things with him,” he said. “He’s just got better and better over time.
“I was just a little bit worried about the track today. He sat three deep with no cover and still had the audacity to still find and still win.
“He’s a very nice horse.
“He deserved to be nearly favourite in this race. His form’s been that good.
“He just needs that little bit of luck. Jimmy did the rest for us.”
Jockey Jim Cassidy piloted the $4.40 favourite to victory as he had done in the gelding’s other two wins.
They won by a length and a quarter in front of Nuclear Medicine (Robert Thompson) with the same length back to Sommersea Drive (Michael Cahill) in third.
Cassidy described News Alert as a nice ride and he was pleased to win for the 24-year-old trainer.
“It’s a big thrill for me to win for Con,” he said. “He’s a young boy starting off and doing a great job. The horse looked superb today. Another young up and coming trainer.
“Con was very confident today.
“He’s a horse with a lot of ability but he’s just got to do things right and have things go right on the day for him.”
News Alert obviously didn’t mind the going and Cassidy light-heartedly described the wet track as, “good for growing potatoes.”
