Temple of Boom got out of a tight spot to bring home victory in the GPH Express QTIS 2YO Handicap 1000m at Eagle Farm on Saturday, April 25.
The Tony Gollan-trained Temple of Boom (C2 Piccolo GB-Temple Spirit) started as the $3.20 race favourite and drew barrier one, but got boxed in while turning into the home straight.
At the 200m mark $17 outsider Daneomite (Larry Cassidy) made a strong burst up the straight to move into the lead and at the 100m mark Michael Cahill was able to move Temple of Boom into space and effortlessly sprinted home edging out Daneomite on the line.
Bob and Dolly (Eddie Wilkinson) came in third by one and one quarter lengths.
Tony Gollan was heartened by Temple of Boom’s fine finish, even though the race did not go exactly to plan.
“He was blocked for a run a fair way down the straight and he only got out well inside the furlong,” Gollan said. “We were very happy with the way he pulled it off.”
“It was a nice win first up for a horse and it hasn’t knocked him around at all. It’s good to win first up like that and not have to tax your horse too much.”
Gollan was also quick to praise jockey Michale Cahill’s role in the win.
“Michael’s a very good jockey; you don’t have to tell him too much. He works it out for himself.
“He probably would have liked to get out a little earlier than he did, but he got out in enough time and the horse won well.”
Temple of Boom has been a promising horse picking up prizemoney in all of his races. He has amassed $122,195 in prizemoney including $24,000 in QTIS bonuses much to the delight of his trainer.
“QTIS is terrific and that’s why we spent up relatively big at the QTIS sale,” Gollan commented.
“Queensland Racing have done a great job with QTIS and with the breeders.
“It’s only getting bigger and better and I’m certainly very happy to support QTIS horses and buy them and keep racing them.”
In the immediate future, Gollan will train Temple of Boom for a step up in distance.
“Twelve hundred metres is the next assignment. And the way he got to the line you’d think he’d run the 1200m,” he said.
“He’s nominated for the T.J. later in the Carnival, but at this stage we’ll go to a 1200m now in two to three weeks and we’ll feel our way.
“We’ll just play that by ear as we go.”
