Bold Glance defied his $26 odds to pick up his first Black Type win for connections in the Listed Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation Queensland Day 3YO Plate 1400m on Saturday, April 25.
His trainer and part-owner Norm Hilton had more faith than the starting price that the gelding could achieve the victory.
“We were quietly confident,” Hilton said. “It was a bit of a step up in class for him but we’ve always had a pretty high opinion of the horse.”
With good reason too, Bold Glance (G3 Sequalo-Flirting Glance) has picked up prizemoney in all of his eight starts bringing his total haul to $133,750.
His starts have ranged from 1000m to a mile. “I think he’d put in whatever you put him over,” said Hilton.
“We think he’s a 1400m to a mile horse. His next start will be over a mile. He’s had one run over a mile and only got beaten a half head and a short neck at Doomben.
“Most times when he’s been beaten it’s been because of a heavy track or big weights. There’s been a proper excuse for it.”
This time over the 1400m at Eagle Farm, with jockey Kristy Banks aboard, Bold Glance bolted out of barrier 14 and headed for the front and sat second.
Local Talent (Jason Taylor) got a good start and led the field by a few lengths.
Bold Glance wound out at the turn and ran away from the field to win by a length and three quarters.
The two Magic Albert progeny Za Magic (Brad Stewart) and Plain Magic (Christian Reith) rounded out the placings, a length and three quarters separating them.
“We were always going to go forward,” said Hilton.
“Kristy Banks, the jockey, did a really good job. She was one from the outside, after the 200m she had him on the rail one back. That was a good effort.
“He kicked strong in the running.”
With a form record of 3-2-2-1 and a Listed race to his name, Bold Glance connections are happy to have a horse like that.
“We’re pretty excited with it,” said Hilton.
