Luck was on the right side for Calchris on Saturday when the mare drew barrier two in the Listed Cadell-Garrick Fillies and Mares Handicap 1300m at Eagle Farm.
Calchris (M4 Commands-Miss Chakra) has been battling with bad barriers this campaign with her last seven starts all drawing barrier seven or worse.
But when trainer Bruce Hill found Calchris had drawn well in the Listed race he knew they had a good chance at claiming a Black Type win.
“She’s been terribly unlucky the last few runs with bad barriers and things haven’t been going right for her and she’s been going so well on the track at home,” Hill said.
“When we got the good barrier we thought we were in this with a big chance.”
Ridden by Paul Hammersley, Calchris led for the entire 1300 metre journey after jumping from barrier two and responded well under pressure in the final few strides when challenged by the field.

place after being caught wide finishing one and a quarter lengths off the leader. Rash Promise (Stathi Katsidis) finished third a further half neck behind.
A pet around the stables, Calchris can now add a Black Type win to her record that has seen her win a nudge under $102,000 in prizemoney.
“She is just really flying. Everything you do with her, whether it is at home or at the races, she gives you 110 per cent all the time. She’s just the perfect racehorse, she does nothing wrong,” Hill said.
“She’ll have a little break because she’s been in a fair while. She had her first start right back in August. She’ll have a few weeks in the paddock and look for something during the winter.
“She’s a bit of a pet around the joint, she’s got such a lovely nature and she’s done nothing wrong her whole campaign.”
