A practice run wasn’t necessary for the Bruce McLachlan-trained In Rehearsal on Monday at City Pacific Doomben.
Fresh from the paddock, In Rehearsal (G5 More Than Ready-For the Moment) snatched the $50,000 Kings Bloodstock Handicap 1200m from the 10-horse field.
Ridden by Jim Byrne, In Rehearsal was a long way back after a slow start that left him at the tail of the field. Byrne sat patiently until straightening when he hit the outside and flew home.
“He is a back marker and with speed on he has to go to the back,” McLachlan said.
“The race was a bit short for him but with the speed on the race suited him. He is not really a 1200m horse but he was able to go right over the top of them.”
Fresh from the paddock, In Rehearsal hit the line a short neck ahead of Damigos (Stathi Katsidis) with Denmarket (Paul Hammersley) finishing in third place a further one and a quarter of a length back.
McLachlan took over training In Rehearsal last year. “He was just a tried horse that John O’Brien bought for possibly some Country Cups that has turned into a very nice horse,” McLachlan said.
The gelding’s recent win has McLachlan looking outside the Country Cup calendar but insists they will stay grounded with his campaign.
“We just take the races as they come; we’re not going to try and become too ambitious with him.”
