How do I become an apprentice jockey?
After reading the information below, contact the Training Department
at Queensland Racing for advice on getting started.
A jockey apprenticeship includes 4 years as a licensed apprentice
rider. During that time you must progress and complete the required
qualification Certificate IV in Racing Jockey.
This qualification commences as soon as you start and includes
stablehand and track rider training. You will need to sign a training
agreement and enrollment forms. The training agreement arranged
through the new apprenticeship centre is the key document supporting
your apprenticeship.
To become an apprentice you must complete the pre-vocational requirements
specified by Queensland Racing. These include meeting weight and
physical requirements, undertaking training and demonstrating competence
in pre-requisite units of the qualification above.
The final step to commencing race riding is a satisfactory assessment
of your readiness to ride in races by Queensland Racing. This includes
but is not limited to satisfactory completion of a number of barrier
trials.
An apprenticeship is work based with training and assessment provided
by Queensland Racing. Satisfactory progress in your training
is required if you wish to continue in your apprenticeship.
