Cummings Takes QR/Sky Gold Prize South

LIGHTLY raced filly Besame Mucho booked herself a start in the Group 1 Carlton Draught Doomben 10,000 on May 22 with her impressive Queensland debut at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Ridden by Darren Beadman, Besame Mucho (F3 Encosta de Lago-Lottey) proved too good in the $100,000 Queensland Racing – Sky Channel Gold Greenslopes Pharmacy Plate.

She revelled in the going and scored by three-quarters of a length from the Peter Moody trained Ancient Song with the Kiwi visitor, Gwen’s Rules, two and a half lengths back in third.

Besame Mucho is trained by Cups King Bart Cummings, who is heading towards a clash with Only Words in the 10,000 despite admitting he is not keen to take Saturday’s Byrne Stakes winner on in the G1 sprint.

Cummings does not want Besame Mucho to campaign through the Brisbane Winter Carnival as he wants to give her a good spell before a Spring Carnival campaign.

“The Doomben 10,000 is only a fortnight away and it has to be a pretty attractive option, although Only Words will be very hard to beat,” Cummings said.

Besame Mucho is a daughter of the former handy Melbourne mare Lottey, which has also produced triple Group and Listed winner, Gold Lottey, a full-sister to Besame Mucho.

Saturday’s win was the filly’s fourth, along with one second from seven starts, which has included the Listed PJ Bell Handicap at Randwick in April.

Ancient Song and Gwen’s Rules are both also among the nominations for the Doomben 10,000.
