Only Words Definite Starter
In Doomben 10,000
TRAINER John Hawkes has decided to start promising
filly, Only Words, in Saturday’s G1 Carlton
Draught 10,000 at NCF Doomben, rather than send her
for a spell.
Rod Quinn, who has retained the ride on Only Words,
told John Schell of the Sydney Morning Herald: “She
showed with her last start win in the Byrne Hart
that she is top quality.
“She is very exciting. All she wants to do
is win and I’m sure she’ll acquit herself
very well again in the Doomben 10,000.”
Raced by the Darling Downs-based Canning Downs Stud,
run by John Barnes and Joy Mackay, Only Words has
won six of her seven starts.
Only Words is favourite for the 10,000 and next
month’s AAMI Stradbroke but a decision on a
start in the latter will not be made until after
she runs on Saturday.
Queensland Racing chief handicapper, Lester Grimmett,
today penalised Victorian galloper, Super Elegant,
one kilo (to 55kg) for the Stradbroke following his
impressive win in Saturday’s Goodwood Handicap
at Morphettville.
Chris Munce has until tomorrow to decide whether
he will appeal a seven meeting careless riding suspension
incurred in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic at the
Gold Coast on Saturday.
Munce has been engaged for the Peter Moody-trained
Ancient Song in the Doomben 10,000. “She went
good the other day with a big weight on a wet track,
so I expect her to perform well on Saturday,” he
said.
There was speculation in the interstate media today
that the Guy Walter-trained Defier may have run his
last race when fourth in the Hollindale Stakes behind
This Manshood at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
