VICTORIAN sprinter Super Elegant completed a Group
1 double in the space of a week when he edged out
Our Egyptian Raine in Saturday’s Carlton Draught
10,000 at NCF Doomben.
Trainer Tony Vasil, who a week earlier won the Goodwood
Handicap in Adelaide with Super Elegant, now has
his sights on next month’s AAMI Stradbroke
Handicap with the six-year-old.
Super Elegant took his record to 13 wins and $1.38
million in stakes and gave Vasil his fourth G1 after
the wins of Marstic in the 2000 Goodwood and the
2003 Victoria Derby with Elvstroem.
Our Egyptian Raine was again relegated to the G1
bridesmaid’s role when Super Elegant fought
back strongly for Greg Childs to score by a half
head.
The eye-catching run of the race came from the Queensland-owned
Scenic Peak, which finished third and burst into
Stradbroke contention for new trainer, John Hawkes.
Part owner David Trevethan, who has been trying
for 30 years to win a G1, ended up winning two in
the space of eight days. He told of initially rejecting
an offer to share in the ownership of Super Elegant.
“My best mate, Rob Lyons, asked me to go halves
in this fellow as a weanling in 1999. At first I
refused but Rob eventually persuaded me and we bought
him for $45,000.
“Super Elegant had a couple of runs for us
and then we sold 10 per cent each to some mates,
Peter Potter and Tallis Marangoudis.”
Mr Trevethan, who runs a clothing business in Melbourne,
was a former part owner of the outstanding galloper,
Better Loosen Up. “I sold my share after he
won three races and we all know what he went on to
do.”
It was a frustrating 10,000 for connections of the
Sydney mare, Our Egyptian Raine, who had to be content
with their fourth G1 second this campaign.
“She ran another brave race and we’ll
go into the Stradbroke now and hopefully have a change
of luck,” trainer Grahame Begg said.
Nash Rawiller (Our Egyptian Raine) and Opie Bosson
(King’s Chapel, which finished a terrific fifth)
were each suspended by stewards for 10 meetings and
fined $2500 on careless riding charges.
Depending on appeals, Rawiller could miss riding
Pentastic in the Doomben Cup and Our Egyptian Raine
in the Stradbroke, while Bosson has the Doomben Cup
mount on Distinctly Secret and King’s Chapel
in the Stradbroke.
