Another QTIS Bargain Earns Black Type Glory

UNDERRATED filly Serenote might only have won at one of her previous 10 starts but justified the confidence of connections with victory in the Listed Lyndhurst Stud Doomben Slipper on Saturday.

Ridden by Chris Munce, Serenote (F2 Victory Note-Serene-Halo) won the race by a half neck from Birthday Bash (by Shinko Forest) with the beautifully bred, Stromberg Carlson, a long neck away in third.

As well as a win over star two-year-old filly Star Shiraz in the McDougall Stakes in December, Serenote had also run four thirds in her first 10 starts, including a last start third to Midnight City in the Listed Ken Russell Classic at the Gold Coast on May 25.

Trainer Stewart Mackinnon has Serenote nominated for the Group 1 QTC Sires Produce on June 5 and the TJ Smith on June 14, but will now head straight to the TJ Smith.

“We will be dodging the Sires as horses like Golden Fox might be a bit too nippy for her over the 1400m. We will go straight into the TJ Smith where she will be suited by the 1600m,” Mackinnon said.

Queensland Racing handicapper Lester Grimmett has penalised Serenote by 1kg in the TJ Smith to 51.5kg, which will guarantee that the filly gains a start in the race that is worth $575,000 for QTIS eligible horses.

Melbourne owners Chris and Karen Zammit purchased Serenote for just $7,000 at the 2003 Magic Millions yearling sale, after Victory Honours, an older filly by Willowbend Stud stallion Victory Note, had shown promise with Mackinnon.

The Zammit’s gave a 10 per cent share in Serenote to Mackinnon, whose brother Don, who previously worked for Glenlogan Park Stud, the vendors for Serenote at the sale, picked her out for them.

Saturday’s win in the Doomben Slipper took Serenote’s earnings to $181,380, which includes QTIS bonuses of $68,300.

As well as the TJ Smith, Mackinnon is also eyeing off the Listed Australia Post Stakes at the Tattersall’s meeting at Eagle Farm on June 26.

“She has done well since winning on Saturday, and if she is still doing well after the TJ Smith, we will look at the Australia Post Stakes, as the QTIS money isn’t bad and I love getting the QTIS bonuses,” Mackinnon said.
